» TALKING TO KIDS ON SCIENCE MATTERS
By Ozodi Thomas Osuji Ph.D | Published 03/8/2009 | Technology and Science | Unrated
On Sunday, March 1, 2009, I had nothing on my plate and decided to kill time by recalling my relationship with a gifted child that I used to mentor. The following is our typical conversation. If your child is very smart you might want to have him read this material, read it yourself and both of you talk about it. It is time that our kids are made competitive rather than made excuses for (their lack of competitiveness).
» Within the Internet lies Africa’s clay of wisdom
By Philip Emeagwali | Published 01/18/2009 | Technology and Science | Unrated
According to history books, gun-wielding European slave traders kidnapped one in five Africans and transported them across the oceans to the Americas. A less visible, but no means less drastic technological tool of suppression, is the compass, a device used worldwide for navigation. In the same way that Britain used its maritime knowledge and the US harnessed its intellectual capital to rule the world, the early slave traders used the simple compass to wreak havoc on civilization.
» Around the Globe,Technology Widens Rich-Poor Gap
By Philip Emeagwali | Published 01/17/2009 | Technology and Science | Unrated
Oil has made us billions and fuelled our economic stability, but oil has also become the bane of our existence. For some, it is a curse that has caused poverty and corruption, but for others it is an essential source of untold wealth and power. But as the gap between rich and poor countries continues to expand, it is clear that intellectual capital and technology rule the world, and that natural resources such as oil, gold, and diamonds are no longer the primary determinants of wealth.
» Re-building Nigeria’s Energy Infrastructure as Political Appeasement to poverty-stricken Citizens
By Chris Odetunde Ph.D | Published 08/14/2008 | Technology and Science | Unrated

The rising standards of living in the developing countries and their participation in the global markets have exposed the mass critical needs of companies to be more competitive and realize the increased pressure to increase productivity and lower costs. Nigeria is no exception to this pressure even though she is stuck in the consuming stage of development.

» Rural Electrification and Energy Sufficiency: Matters arising – Governmental policies, Private sector Contributions and solar energy (Part 2 of 4)
By Chris Odetunde Ph.D | Published 01/8/2008 | Technology and Science | Unrated

The idea of seeking helping hands from government other than sound energy policies must be discouraged, not from inefficient government and political leaders that see politics as a way for self aggrandizement. In Nigeria, for example, every achievable business success is tied to who one knows in government.

Most developed countries see African nations as merely dumping grounds for products and for some untested energy policies in areas of agriculture, energy, education, medicine to mention but a few areas. This fact is also reflected by African consumerism policies in the areas of Agricultural, energy and educational, healthcare, etc.I subscribe to the school of thought that believes that an African nation that defies this label would ultimately end up controlling larger share of the African and even global market.
» MAKING A CASE FOR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS IN NIGERIA
By Kayode Oladele | Published 02/21/2007 | Technology and Science | Rating:

In its bid to address the importance of uninterrupted power supply and energy needs, the environment and concerns about climate change, the Federal Government of Nigeria has finally moved to establish nuclear energy power plants.

Hundreds of were killed and several injured with various degrees of burns in an oil pipeline blast in Lagos on Tuesday December 26, 2006, following an attempt by residents to scoop fuel from a vandalized pipeline. Just in May this year, not less than one hundred and fifty people lost their lives in a similar incident in Lagos and between 1998 and now, the country has lost close to two thousand victims of pipeline explosion.

» BIOREMEDIATION: AN ANTIDOTE TO OIL SPILLAGE PROBLEMS
Bioremediation is the use of biological agents such as bacteria or plants to remove or neutralize contaminants, as in polluted soil or water. The use of bioremediation had been proven on many projects to be effective. It involves enhancement and augmentation technology for efficient environmental clean-up of oil and other hydrocarbon in water and soil. The discovery of bacteria and other microscopic organisms by a French scientist Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) was generally regarded as a major breakthrough in the medical world.
» AVIATION AND ENERGY POLICIES IN A DEVELOPING ECONOMY
By Chris Odetunde Ph.D | Published 12/6/2006 | Technology and Science | Unrated

When a barrel of oil is bought from Nigeria by US, Europe or China for, say, $28/barrel, it is refined into different products which when sold can generate upward of $2,000.00. Nigeria, to the best of this author’s knowledge, neither adds value to a barrel of crude oil sold Nor use the revenue generated from the crude to improve citizens’ lives. If, God forbid, the oil dries out tomorrow, Nigeria will be up the creek without a paddle.

» IMPROVING THE AVIATION INDUSTRY AND THE NATION’S AIRSPACE - policy, procedure and implementation.

If Nigeria can only understand the genesis of the aviation industry, she would understand what it takes for a people to be successful as individuals, as scientists and as a nation. To understand aviation and improve on the industry, our nation must avail herself of history of aviation and the inherent characteristics of aviators resident in all pioneers. These characters are ingenuity, creativity, collaboration, risk taking, genuineness of purpose, industry and reference.
» Change of Baton, In Partial Defense of The Aviation Minister But Not of The Industry
By Chris Odetunde Ph.D | Published 11/2/2006 | Nigerian Affairs , Technology and Science | Unrated

It is unusual to defend a minister in an industry that takes care of many of the nation’s intellectual and material properties but certain issues must be brought to bare in order to either hang the minister or let go of his many unintended sins. As far back as I know, the Nigerian aviation industry has always been controlled not by the professionals that man it but the politicians that do not understand the imperatives of aviation and its attended gravitas in the world economy.

» Aborishade's Aviation Kills My Emotion

Nigerian leaders and the citizens are much more alike than I had often thought. Each party knows what is wrong but either too naive or unconcerned or afraid to do something tangible in order to eradicate the problem. We are a nation of big ego, big grammar, big everything without the ability to solve an obvious problem. I have often heard and often felt for it: that Nigerians are smart people.

» The Real Story: Recycling and Identity Theft

On my way to work not long ago, I habitually picked up the daily Metro paper to check listings of TV programs for the day. My attention was drawn to the investigative BBC1 news documentary called ‘The Real Story’. The feature story for that evening’s edition was titled ‘Dangers of the second hand PC Market’. I was immediately interested in finding out what facts had been unearthed and resolved not to miss the program.
