Laolu Akande, experienced reporter, writer and editor is a columnist and contributor with chatafrik.com. He has interviewed eminent news makers like the US President George W. Bush, Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan, Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo-of Nigeria, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf-of Liberia, real estate magnet Donald Trump, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka and American folk hero Colin Powell.
He has also reported from the White House, the United Nations, and covered US presidential elections. He worked at The Philadelphia Inquirer, the 7th largest newspaper in the U.S. and New York Newsday, the 6th largest metropolitan paper published in the U.S. as an editor, before leaving to pursue Africa-centered media projects like AFRICANANEWS.COM, where he is editor-in-chief.
Also, Akande is The Guardian's North American Bureau Chief. He started writing for the paper in 1989. Laolu has also written for the leading UN magazine on Africa, Africa Recovery-now Africa Renewal and edited other UN publications. He was a fellow of the Times Mirror (Now Tribune) Minority Editorial Training Program. As a noted speaker on Africa affairs, he has spoken and moderated several discussions on Nigeria and Africa issues in the US and interviewed in the media-local and international including Air America radio, among others
Prior to migrating to the United States, Laolu was the editor of one of Nigeria's oldest surviving private newspapers, Nigerian Tribune, which he earlier served as Leader Writer and Special Projects Editor, among others. He was a founding Senior Writer of The News magazine and Tempo in Lagos, Nigeria.
An alumnus of the University of Ibadan and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Laolu, holds a Bachelors in History and a Masters degree in Language/Communication Arts. Laolu, belongs to a number of professional organizations, including the National Association of African Journalists, NAAJ and the National Association of Black Journalists, NABJ. He is also the CEO of Distinction News magazine.
