» Babangida: Insensitivity Carried Too Far
By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye | Published 05/15/2010 | Government and Politics | Rating:  printer version

The sun rises in the East and sets in the West; Adolf Hitler declared a costly war on the United States on December 11, 1941; Saddam Hussein invaded and annexed Kuwait on August 2, 1990 and sparked off international crises that left his country in ruins; Ibrahim Babangida annulled in June 1993 what is widely regarded as Nigeria's fairest and freest election and plunged his country into needless, disastrous crises that consumed many precious lives and invaluable property.

» Nigeria: Diminished By Greed!
By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye | Published 05/1/2010 | Government and Politics | Rating:  printer version

To a people addicted to the tragic luxury of self-delusion, truth hurts badly. But then, truth always refuses to go away. It lingers around to perpetually taunt and haunt those that loathe and despise its face. Now, the truth we can no longer afford to deny today is that anybody, in fact, any animal can rule Nigeria. I mean that even a baboon can be Nigeria’s president or governor.

» Nigeria’s Cult Of Corruption
By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye | Published 10/6/2009 | Editorial | Unrated  printer version

Virtually every Nigerian knows and strongly believes that any day Nigeria is able to make up its mind to end its obscene and ruinous romance with the stubborn monster called “Corruption”, this country will automatically witness the kind of prosperity no one had thought was possible in these parts. Just imagine the amount of public funds being stolen and squandered daily under various guises by too many public officers

» Mr. President, How Long Shall We Suffer Thee?
By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye | Published 08/7/2009 | Review | Unrated  printer version

While several northern states became the gory theatre for mindless violence and wanton bloodshed last week, and hundreds of corpses littered the already greening stretch of the savannah leaving a dreadful fog of gloom, mourning, sadness, fear and despair in the air, President Umar Musa Yar’Adua and his increasingly fashionable and insufferably ubiquitous wife, Turai, grinning from ear to ear like over-excited pupils undertaking their first excursion, and resplendent in their best Sallah costumes, boarded a Presidential Jet at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja,

» The Making Of A Dangerous Nation
By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye | Published 07/30/2009 | Editorial | Unrated  printer version

In October 2004, Professor Chinua Achebe told Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria 's "civilian" ruler at the time, that Nigeria under his watch was unarguably "too dangerous." That was about five years ago. Today, words would fail anyone, including Achebe himself, to describe Nigeria 's current state.

» The Reign Of Squander-maniacs
By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye | Published 07/16/2009 | Editorial | Unrated  printer version

While hapless, helpless Nigerian students remain at home, for several weeks now, idling away precious time and wasting their lives due to the indefinite strike embarked upon by university teachers because of the Federal Government's refusal to implement an agreement it had freely entered with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and patients are being snatched away every other hour, if not minute, by clearly avoidable deaths because of the ongoing strike by Nigerian health workers

» Strange Gift To Miss Imo State
By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye | Published 07/13/2009 | Editorial | Unrated  printer version

A couple of weeks ago, something really strange and potentially disastrous happened in Owerri, the Imo State capital. A certain Miss Onyinyechi Ibeaga emerged winner of the Miss Imo 2009 beauty pageant organized by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Owerri. At the grand finale of the pageant, the Imo State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Ada Okwuonu, offered the girl an automatic admission into the Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, to study any course of her choice.

» Mr. President, Sanusi Is Right!
By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye | Published 06/10/2009 | Editorial | Unrated  printer version

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, was not saying anything new when he suggested last week that President Umar Musa Yar’Adua should consider abridging his so-called Seven Point Agenda to about two or three for effective and beneficial implementation.
It was an honest, sharp, well-timed articulation of the widespread view of Nigerians on the subject. It is, therefore, saddening that overzealous characters at the Presidency are trying to make big news out of a very simple, straightforward advice from a genuinely concerned Nigerian.

» Enough Of The Obasanjo Family, Please!
By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye | Published 11/26/2008 | Special Features | Unrated  printer version

Last Saturday (Nov 22, 2008) I wanted to purchase a copy of Bitter-Sweet: My Life With Obasanjo, by Mrs. Oluremi Obasanjo, the woman who is sparing no effort just to underline her belief that no matter what anyone, including even Gen Olusegun Obasanjo himself, thinks is the case, the truth she would want everyone to see and swallow is that among the countless women swarming the Obasanjo harem, she is the only one qualified to be called his wife. Others, she insists, are mere concubines.

» If The Niger Bridge Collapses …
By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye | Published 10/22/2008 | Travel and Tourism | Unrated  printer version

Please, could somebody be nice to this hapless nation and walk across to President Umar Musa Yar'Adua's cosy castle in Aso Villa, where not a few believe he is still in bed enjoying a very refreshing midmorning sleep, wake him with a very gentle tap on his shoulder, and ask him what his reaction would likely be if he was suddenly roused from deep slumber with the tragic news that the Niger Bridge had collapsed
